Create Health Ways of Working

Insights from Ten Ehealth Innovation Projects

The book Create Health Ways of Working: Insights from Ten eHealth Innovation Research Projects presents findings from the meta-research project Create & Health Innovation Ways of Working Analysis, also known as CHIWAWA. In this project, researchers from Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (Research Group Investigative Capacity and Co-design Research Group) assessed the use of creative working methods in healthcare innovation processes. They examined ten research projects from Dutch knowledge institutions conducted between 2018 and 2022. These projects and the meta-research were part of the ZonMw program Create Health.

The book features case studies of the ten eHealth innovation research projects, focusing on themes such as dementia, loneliness, and obesity. It also delves into the creative working methods used in these projects, explores relational processes in knowledge exchange, and assesses the impact of such collaborations on both the healthcare and creative industries.

Key findings emphasize that creative working methods are challenging to define and cannot be fully captured by terms like ‘iterative’ and ‘designerly.’ It was observed that methodologies from researchers in different disciplines often resemble each other more than expected, revealing opportunities for collaboration. In joint efforts between the healthcare sector and the creative industry, it is crucial for consortium partners to take the time to recognize and leverage each other’s unique contributions and methodologies, requiring explicit commitment and attention from all parties, even if they have previously collaborated. Results from this meta-research show that such collaborations impact both sectors (healthcare and creative industries) on various levels (academic and practical) and affect different actors and target groups, both process-wise and in terms of outcomes.

The book concludes with recommendations for future research consortia, funders, and practitioners (including the creative industry, healthcare sector, and target groups) and introduces a tool (based on the Research Pathway Model) designed to support discussions among stakeholders in healthcare innovation processes.
