The World Upside Down
The Societal Impact of Evolving Design Practices
In her inaugural lecture for the new research line “Societal Impact Design” at Hogeschool Inholland, Wina Smeenk outlined on December 1 how creative professionals can make a significant contribution to addressing societal challenges. According to Wina, the world is off balance, and we must all work together to ensure it tilts in the right direction.
In her lecture “The World Upside Down,” delivered on December 1, Smeenk argued that we can no longer deny the need for change. She aims to use design to make the world a better place.
Whether addressing major issues such as dementia, climate change, COVID-19, or poverty, the common factor is the quality of life. Achieving this requires change, which people often find challenging. For Smeenk, the key lies in a collaborative, transdisciplinary approach: equal partnership with other disciplines and domains.
