2021: Images of Applied Design Research

Researchers study the world as it is, while designers strive to change it. Applied design research blends these two approaches to both generate new knowledge and develop practical solutions. Given the significant differences and varying standards between design and research, how can this integration be effectively achieved? This book doesn’t serve as a recipe book but offers an insightful look into the work of 22 lecturers from different universities of applied sciences. They apply design research across diverse fields, from healthcare to retail. Each contribution provides a unique perspective, illustrated with examples. While none of the contributions offers a comprehensive guide, together they create a rich overview of applied design research—its principles, applications, and what one can expect from it.
